Nillumbik Shire Council Sugarloaf Link Deer Control Project
Rising deer numbers in Nillumbik are seriously impacting on the local environment, destroying native vegetation and reducing biodiversity. They are causing financial hardship to residents through crop damage and are posing a serious hazard on roads, risking lives.
Abzeco is working with Nillumbik Shire Council to implement deer control in the Bend of Islands, Watsons Creek and Christmas Hills area. Other entities involved in the partnership include DELWP (Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning), Parks Victoria, Melbourne Water, Wurundjeri Council, Bend of Islands Conservation Association (BICA), Christmas Hills Landcare Group and local landholders.
Abzeco staff and contractors are all professionally licensed and experienced in working in peri-urban areas. Feral deer will be shot humanely using specialised equipment. Abzeco holds a Field Harvester licence and has a PrimeSafe licensed Game Meat Harvest Vehicle for transport to a licenced facility. All deer will be removed and processed for either pet food or human consumption.
This project will help inform future deer control programs across the Shire.
