Geoff Carr has joined Abzeco
Abzeco is very pleased to announce that Geoff Carr has joined Abzeco as a Principal Botanist. Geoff is one of Victorias leading Botanists, taxonomists and a horticulturalist with over 40 years experience.
Geoff has researched and published on several groups of plants, notably orchids (mostly Caladenia), lilies (Dianella), naturalised willows (Salix), and Prickly Pear (Opuntia) in Australia. He has described over 30 new plant species and is currently revising the genus Correa in Victoria and undertaking ongoing Dianella studies. He has authored or co-authored over 800 papers, reports and other publications and given 100s of formal presentations on threatened species and weeds to a range of audiences including Government agency staff and community groups.
Geoff has exceptional knowledge of Victoria’s and South-eastern Australia’s flora and vegetation communities. He was involved the latest Conservation Status Assessment project run by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) (now the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA)) which involved reassessing the status of all plant (and animal species) that are currently considered to be rare or threatened in Victoria.
Geoff’s intricate knowledge of Victoria’s vegetation communities ranges from terrestrial forests, woodlands, heathlands and grasslands to wetland communities (freshwater wetlands, peatlands, riparian environments and saltmarshes). He combines this knowledge with his extensive horticultural expertise to develop detailed revegetation and environmental rehabilitation plans, including the translocation of threatened flora species.
Geoffs’s well-known expertise in identifying cryptic threatened plants in the field means he is regularly requested by a range of government and non-government clients to undertake threatened flora surveys, particularly for difficult-to-identify species such as Orchids.
Geoff is looking forward to sharing his extensive knowledge and expertise with Abzeco staff and clients who recognise the rare and unique opportunity this presents and are very keen to continue to increase expand their knowledge.
